Generalissimus Saw Maung was a prominent politician in Myanmar born on May 12, 1928, in Mandalay, British India. He seized power on September 18, 1988, with support from Ne Win, ousting the democratically elected president Maung Maung. He violently suppressed democratic protests, restoring military rule and serving as Prime Minister from September 21, 1988. Furthermore, he dissolved the Burma Socialist Programme Party and established the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC). Saw Maung was later ousted in 1992 by hardliners who deemed his approach toward Aung San Suu Kyi too lenient.
