Santi Onaindia was a Basque priest and writer born in Amoroto, Biscay in 1909, and passed away in Amorebieta in 1996. As a Carmelite priest, he served as a chaplain on the Republican front during the Spanish Civil War. Following his service, he spent several years in prison and later in exile in Carmelite convents outside the Basque Country, returning in 1951. He is notable for translating Virgil's Aeneid into Basque and wrote predominantly in the Biscayan dialect.
