Sam Nzima was a South African photojournalist born on August 8, 1934, in Lillydale, Mpumalanga. He became widely known for capturing the iconic photograph of a dying 12-year-old Hector Pieterson during the Soweto uprising on June 16, 1976. This image became a symbol of the struggle against apartheid and was shared worldwide. Nzima passed away on May 12, 2018, in the Rob Ferreira Hospital in Nelspruit and is survived by his wife, Thelma, and seven children.
