Sir Ahmed Salman Rushdie is a British-Indian novelist and essayist born on June 19, 1947. His second novel, 'Midnight's Children,' won the Booker Prize in 1981. His controversial fourth novel, 'The Satanic Verses,' led to international uproar and a fatwa for his execution issued by Ayatollah Khomeini on February 14, 1989. Rushdie has lived in the United States since 2000, working at Emory University. In 2012, he published 'Joseph Anton: A Memoir,' detailing his life after 'The Satanic Verses.' He survived an assassination attempt on August 12, 2022.
