Salbatore Mitxelena was a Basque Franciscan friar and writer born in Zarautz, Guipúscoa in 1919 and who died in Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland in 1965. He became notable for authoring the first book in Basque published in Spain after the Spanish Civil War in 1949. After being a preacher in Biscay and Guipúscoa, he faced conflict with church authorities due to his open-minded views, leading to his exile to South America from 1954 to 1962. Mitxelena continued to write and eventually dedicated his later life to aiding Spanish immigrants in Switzerland.
