Saar Netanel is a notable figure in Jerusalem, known for being the first openly gay man elected to an Israeli city council. He served as a member of the Jerusalem city council and was one of the owners of The Shushan Pub, Jerusalem’s only gay pub, until its closure in 2007. Additionally, Netanel was the chairman of the Jerusalem Meretz branch and was active in the GLBT community, notably being arrested during the Wigstock '98 event, an AIDS fundraiser and drag festival.
