Saana Murtti is a Finnish sculptor and ceramicist. She was born in Helsinki on May 2, 1974. She studied ceramics at the Institute of Arts and Design in Helsinki and holds Masters degrees from the University of Wales, Cardiff and Aalto University. Murtti's work is inspired by her own experiences and philosophy. She is interested in phenomenology and the theories of Edmund Husserl, Emmanuel Levinas, and Martin Buber. She believes that categorizing the world creates distance. For example, in her series Disappearances1, she presents a pile of carefully stacked clothing. For the installation Disappearances2, she presents 18 sculptures of the same pair of worn shoes in increasingly smaller dimensions as if the shoes were disappearing.
