He was the eldest son of mystery novelist Seishi Yokomizo and learned music theory from critic Keisei Soku. After graduating from Waseda University, he worked as a music reporter for 23 years at Tokyo Newspaper before becoming a music critic in 1977. Over his career, he traveled extensively and was awarded the first-class medal by the Finnish government in 2005. Additionally, he taught at several music universities in Japan.
