Ruth Alice Hannah Mary Wood, Countess of Halifax, was a prominent British racehorse owner born on April 18, 1916, and passed away on August 31, 1989. She made history as one of the first three women elected to the Jockey Club in December 1977. Ruth was the only child of Neil Primrose and Lady Victoria Stanley. She married Charles Wood in 1936, becoming Countess of Halifax after his father’s death. The couple had three children and enjoyed success in horse racing, notably winning The Derby in 1978 with their horse, Shirley Heights.
