Rupert Oppenauer was an Austrian chemist born on February 3, 1910, in Burgstall, South Tyrol. He initially studied mathematics at the University of Innsbruck in 1927 before transferring to ETH Zurich, where he graduated as a chemical engineer in 1931. In 1934, he earned his doctorate with a thesis on compounds similar to ascorbic acid. He is best known for the Oppenauer oxidation method, which describes the oxidation of secondary alcohols to ketones.
