Rutgerus Johannes (Ru) de Gier (1921-2004) was a Dutch sculptor and painter born in Rotterdam. He was the son of a banker and started drawing at a young age. During World War II, he was captured during the Rotterdam razzia and was sent to Germany, where he was introduced to sculpture. After returning to Rotterdam, he created art from rubble and worked in various materials, including stone, metal, and wood. He transitioned to painting later in life due to health issues. De Gier lived and worked in Rotterdam until his death.
