He represented the United States in the 1948 St. Moritz Olympics as part of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team, which officially participated in the opening ceremony. Ikola played for the Colorado College Tigers in 1950, winning the NCAA ice hockey championship. His career included controversies regarding player eligibility, and he faced doubts about the presence of professional players in the Olympic team.
