He identified the common Dog Rose Rosa canina as the highest source of this vitamin. Later, he challenged the conventional taxonomy of British elms, acknowledging a broader diversity of species and hybrids. Furthermore, Melville created the first Red Data Book on threatened plants, and a species of tree, Acacia melvillei, was named in his honor.
