He was recognized for his extraordinary bravery on August 29, 1975, receiving the George Cross posthumously. Earlier, in 1958, he was awarded the British Empire Medal for gallantry while serving in Cyprus with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, where he displayed repeated acts of courage in disarming bombs and booby traps set by terrorists.
