Rogelio Martínez Díaz, known as El Gallego, was a Cuban guitarist and singer born on September 7, 1905, in Matanzas. He became a member of the orchestra Sonora Matancera in 1926 as a guitarist and chorus singer. In 1948, he succeeded founder Valentín Cané as director, leading the orchestra to international success. By the 1960s, Sonora Matancera was based in New York. Martínez played a crucial role in the careers of musicians such as Celia Cruz and Vicentico Valdés. He passed away on May 13, 2001.
