Roderick MacKinnon is an American biochemist and physician, currently a professor of molecular neurobiology and biophysics at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute affiliated with Rockefeller University in New York. He was born on February 19, 1956. MacKinnon was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2003 alongside Peter Agre for his work on the mechanics and structure of ion channels in human cells. He studied at Boston University and Brandeis University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry in 1978, followed by an M.D. from Tufts University in 1982.
