Chanock was an American pediatrician and virologist, renowned for his significant contributions to the prevention and treatment of childhood respiratory infections over more than 50 years at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Born on July 8, 1924, in Chicago, he pursued a medical education after being drafted into the army during World War II. Chanock discovered human respiratory syncytial virus and researched various infectious diseases, leading to the development of vaccines. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and received several prestigious awards before passing away on July 30, 2010.
