He earned the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2010 for his role in developing IVF. Edwards completed his PhD in 1955 at the University of Edinburgh and collaborated with surgeon Patrick Steptoe on the first IVF procedure, which led to the birth of Louise Brown, the world's first 'test-tube baby,' on July 25, 1978. He faced criticism from the Vatican for his contributions to reproductive technology.
