Robert Laurel Crippen is a retired American naval officer, pilot, test pilot, aerospace engineer, and astronaut. He flew into space four times, serving as a pilot on STS-1, the first Space Shuttle mission in April 1981, and as commander of STS-7 in June 1983. He also participated in STS-41-C and STS-41-G in April and October of 1984, respectively. Crippen received the Congressional Space Medal of Honor for his contributions. He was also actively involved in recovery efforts following the Challenger disaster.
