Robert Burns Woodward was an American chemist born on April 10, 1917, and passed away on July 8, 1979. He was born in Boston and studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Between 1941 and 1963, he taught chemistry at Harvard University. In 1963, he became the director of the Woodward Research Institute in Basel, Switzerland. He, along with American chemist William Doering, synthesized quinine in 1944 and cholesterol and cortisone in 1951. He directed research on strychnine in 1954 and won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1965 for his work on antibiotics.
