Rita Miljo (1931-2012) was a South African conservationist and animal rights pioneer, best known for founding the Centre for Animal Rehabilitation and Education (CARE) in Limpopo. Born in East Prussia, she aspired to be a veterinarian from a young age. After moving to South Africa, she dedicated her life to rescuing and rehabilitating baboons and other wildlife, overcoming skepticism due to her lack of formal training. Her efforts changed perceptions of baboon care and significantly impacted animal rehabilitation in the region. Miljo died in a tragic fire at CARE, leaving behind a legacy as an expert in wildlife conservation.
