Riichi Sekiyama was a prominent Japanese professional go player born on December 23, 1909, in Hyogo. He apprenticed under Tamejiro Suzuki starting in 1924 and became a professional in 1925. Sekiyama made history by winning the inaugural Honinbo title in 1941. Despite this success, he faced difficulties defending his title against Utaro Hashimoto in 1943 and subsequently had to retire due to health issues. Throughout his career, he trained several notable pupils, including Takeo Kajiwara and Yutaka Shiraishi.
