Rigoberta Menchú Tum, born on January 9, 1959, is a K'iche' politician and human rights activist from Guatemala. She has dedicated her life to promoting the rights of Indigenous people in Guatemala during and after the Guatemalan Civil War (1960-1996) and advocating for Indigenous rights internationally. Menchú received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 and the Princess of Asturias Award in 1998, along with several other prestigious awards. She is also an author and served as a UNESCO goodwill ambassador. Additionally, she ran for the presidency of Guatemala in 2007 and 2011.
