Richard S. Hamilton, born in 1943, is a mathematics professor at Columbia University. He obtained his bachelor's degree from Yale in 1963 and his Ph.D. from Princeton in 1966, supervised by Robert Gunning. Hamilton has also taught at the University of California, Irvine, University of California, San Diego, and Cornell University. His main contributions lie in differential geometry, particularly in geometric analysis. He has received several prestigious awards, including the Oswald Veblen Prize in Geometry (1996) and the Clay Research Award (2003), and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences (1999) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2003).
