He served as U.S. Ambassador to Germany and held positions as Assistant Secretary of State for both Asia and Europe. Despite being a strong candidate for Secretary of State, he was passed over in favor of Madeleine Albright. Holbrooke also worked as a Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan during the Obama administration until his passing.
