He was ordained in 1964 and held curacies at Whipton and Tavistock before becoming the Vicar of Swimbridge. Gilpin was the Vicar of St Eustachius' Church, Tavistock with Gulworthy from 1973 until 1992, after which he became the Director of Ordinands for the Diocese of Exeter until his appointment as Archdeacon.
