Richard Axel is an American neuroscientist born on July 2, 1946, in New York. He is known for his research on the olfactory system and won the Nobel Prize in 2004 along with fellow scientist Linda Buck, who was part of the same research team. In 1991, their research on olfactory receptor gene sequences revealed that these belong to a family of G-protein-coupled receptors. They analyzed DNA from rats and identified thousands of olfactory receptor genes in mammals, paving the way for genetic and molecular analysis of the sense of smell.
