Riccardo Giacconi is an Italian-American physicist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2002 for his research that contributed to the establishment of X-ray astronomy. He was born on October 6, 1931. Giacconi served as a professor of physics at the University of Milan from 1991 to 1999 and as the director general of the European Southern Observatory in Germany from 1993 to 1999. After returning to the United States in 1999, he became president of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy and oversees research at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
