Renpō Niwa was a prominent Japanese Zen master born in 1905 in Shizuoka Prefecture. He became the 77th abbot of Eihei-ji monastery and was known for his dedication to zazen, enhancing meditation practices for young trainees by rebuilding the zendo. He was also an accomplished brush calligrapher, often using pseudonyms for his work. His dharma heirs include notable figures like Gudō Wafu Nishijima. Niwa passed away in 1993, leaving a significant legacy in Zen practice and art.
