Rangi Ruru Wananga Karaitiana (1909-1970) was a New Zealand musician and songwriter of Māori descent, belonging to the Ngāti Kahungunu and Rangitāne tribes. He served in World War II with the Māori Battalion and led its concert party. Karaitiana is best known for his 1948 hit song "Blue Smoke," recorded with Pixie Williams, marking a milestone as the first record completely produced in New Zealand. This song topped the New Zealand radio charts and was later covered by various international artists.
