Rainer Spurzem is a German astronomer known for his expertise in N-body simulations of galaxies and star clusters. He made significant contributions by being the first to simulate core collapse in a star cluster alongside Sverre Aarseth using a direct N-body algorithm on a Cray supercomputer. Spurzem leads the GRACE project, which focuses on astrophysical particle simulations using reconfigurable hardware, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation and the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research, and Art. He also developed gravitySimulator, utilizing GRAPE accelerator boards.
