She grew up on a small farm owned by her parents, who went bankrupt during an agricultural crisis. After leaving school at age 14, she worked as a housemaid for eight years. Her writing career began in the 1960s after her children left home. She debuted in 1971 with the autobiographical novel 'Pigen' under the pseudonym Rigmor Hansen, contributing to the social realism movement of the 70s and 80s, voicing the experiences of oppressed women.
