He played a pivotal role in identifying ancient organic compounds on Mars, integrating laboratory simulations with field studies and theoretical modeling across biology, chemistry, and physics. His significant research included exploration of volcanic lightning's role in life's origins on Earth. He led projects like the SAM component of the Mars Science Laboratory and the HABIT instrument for the Exomars mission. NASA honored him by naming a Martian mountain after him.
