Josef Manďák was a Czech Catholic priest, a member of the Salesians, who was persecuted during the communist regime. He was ordained in secret by Bishop Trochta in Litoměřice on April 8, 1950, less than a week before the internment of the religious orders. He was interned for five months in the monastery in Osek and then called up for military service in the PTP until 1954. After that, he worked in civilian jobs. In April 1958, he was sentenced to three years in prison for his priestly and Salesian activities. The Regional Court in Uherské Hradiště considered it to be subversion of the republic. In 1960, he was amnestied by the president of the republic and worked again in civilian jobs. From August 1969, he served as an organist and music teacher in Starý Hobzí. After retiring in April 1984, he served as an auxiliary priest at the Church of St. Leopold in Brno. He liked to help, especially in the confessional, according to his health. In 1999, he suffered a serious lung disease. After several months in hospital, he was able to move into the Salesian house in Brno-Žabovřesky in November of the same year. He is buried in the Central Cemetery in Brno.
