Um Dae-seop (1921-2009) was a South Korean library activist who served as the first Secretary of the Korea Library Association. He championed the establishment of village libraries and public library movements, significantly contributing to rural education. Despite a challenging upbringing, he founded a private library in Ulsan in 1951 and sparked the village library movement, leading to thousands of libraries being established. Awards for his service include the Magsaysay Award for public service. He eventually moved to the United States for health reasons and passed away in Los Angeles.
