She practiced as a lawyer until 1990 and lectured in law at a police academy during the 1980s. A member of BCP until 1993, she served as a National Assembly representative between 1997 and 2001 and was the deputy chair of the Assembly and the Bulgarian Euro-Left party. After leaving BCP due to disagreements, she resumed her legal career and taught criminology, later becoming an associate professor.
