Boris Koval (1930-2016) was a Soviet and Russian historian specializing in Latin America, particularly Brazil. He was a sociologist, ethnographer, and political scientist. Koval attained a Doctor of Historical Sciences degree and became a professor in 1972. He served as the director of the Institute of Latin America at the Russian Academy of Sciences from 1993 to 1995, after which he became the lead researcher there. In 2002, he was recognized as an Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation.
