Violet Maqar, also known as Meris Fouad Maqar, was a pioneering Egyptian operatic singer (mezzo-soprano) and a professor of voice at the Cairo Conservatoire. Born on March 5, 1934, she was notable for being the first Egyptian to perform the role of 'Amneris' in Verdi's opera Aida. As a founder of the singing department at the conservatoire, she mentored many artists during her illustrious career. Maqar passed away on February 25, 2011.
