From 1994 to 1999, he was a professor of Old Norse philology at the University of Oslo, where he led the Center for Medieval Studies. Recognized for combining Old Norse philology with literary history, he authored notable works such as 'Saga and Society' and 'Narrative and Honor'. He served as Denmark's representative for the Nordic Council's Literature Prize and was appointed honorary doctor by the University of Iceland shortly before his passing.
