Poon Lim was a Chinese sailor born on March 8, 1918, who survived 133 days adrift in the South Atlantic Ocean. He worked as a second steward on the British merchant ship Benlomonde, which was sunk by a German U-boat on November 23, 1942. After the sinking, Lim found an 8-foot wooden raft with supplies, and when those ran out, he resorted to fishing, hunting seabirds, and collecting rainwater. He was rescued on April 5, 1943, by Brazilian fishermen and later awarded the British Empire Medal by King George VI.
