Born as Sergei Mikhailovich Izvekov on July 23, 1910, he became a monk in 1925 and served in various monasteries and cathedrals. Appointed as Archbishop of Leningrad in 1961, he was elected Patriarch after Aleksi I's death. Pimen navigated the challenges of leading the Orthodox Church under an officially atheistic Communist regime, cooperating with authorities and participating in peace conferences. He notably organized the thousandth anniversary of the Christianization of Rus' in 1988.
