He worked at the Department of Animal Systematics and Zoogeography at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Pim Schoorl conducted his doctoral research under the supervision of Rienk de Jong, focusing on the phylogenetic relationships of woodborers (Cossidae). In 1990, he published a comprehensive study detailing these relationships, identifying 27 new genera for science.
