Phyllis Isobella Pearsall was a British painter and the founder of the Geographers' A-Z Map Company. Born in London on September 25, 1906, she is recognized as one of the most successful business people of the 20th century. In 1935, she became a portrait artist but later lost herself in London while using an old map from 17 years prior. This led her to create a new map for the rapidly expanding London area, including places of interest, after walking 3,000 miles to verify street names. Her work produced the widely used A–Z map.
