Phillip J. Stiles is an American condensed matter physicist born on October 31, 1931, in Manchester, Connecticut. He contributed to the discovery of a two-dimensional electron gas and its quantum properties in semiconductors in 1966. Stiles earned his Bachelor's degree in Physics from Trinity College in 1956 and completed his Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania in 1961. He held research positions at Cambridge and IBM before becoming a professor at Brown University in 1970. He later became a professor at North Carolina State University, where he served as Provost until his retirement in 1998.
