Philippe Gardy is a French poet and Occitanist born in 1948 in Chalon-sur-Saône, Burgundy. Raised in a family that spoke Occitan and Catalan, he studied under Professor Robèrt Lafont in Nimes. Gardy has written various works in Occitan and French that reflect Occitan themes, and he acknowledges the influence of Max Roqueta and Teodòr Aubanèl. He teaches Occitan literature at the University of Pau Valéry in Montpellier and also at the University of Bordeaux. In 1977, he founded and currently directs the sociolinguistic journal Lengas in Montpellier.
