Philip D. Appleman (1926–2020) was an influential American poet, novelist, and academic. A Professor Emeritus at Indiana University, he published seven poetry volumes, three novels, and numerous nonfiction works, notably in critical editions on Darwin and Malthus. His poetry received various accolades and was featured in esteemed publications like Harper's and The New York Times. An active participant in the literary community, he was a founding member of the Poets Advisory Committee of Poets House and contributed to the Humanist Manifesto. Appleman’s works often reflected themes inspired by Charles Darwin.
