Phil Cohran was an American jazz trumpeter born on May 8, 1927. He began his career in the early 1950s playing with Jay McShann's band and later served in a military band. In 1959, he became a member of the Sun Ra Arkestra but left two years later. Cohran co-founded the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in 1965 and later formed the Artistic Heritage Ensemble with Pete Cosey. He also released several albums as a leader.
