Petr Lang was a member of the Czech Republic Prison Service, serving as a guard at the Heřmanice prison since July 1, 2005. On December 10, 2019, while accompanying his daughter Lucie for a medical examination, he heroically protected her from a gunman, Ctirad Vitásek, who opened fire in the waiting room. Lang was shot, sustaining critical injuries, and despite medical efforts, he passed away in the hospital. In recognition of his bravery, he was posthumously awarded the State Medal for Heroism by President Miloš Zeman on October 28, 2020.
