Peter Zschech was a German naval officer born on October 1, 1918, who served as the second commander of the submarine U-505. He is most notable for being the first commanding officer to commit suicide while actively commanding a naval vessel, and uniquely, he was also the only submariner to do so while underwater. His tragic end occurred on October 24, 1943, marking a significant and somber moment in naval history.
