He earned his doctorate under Eberhard Ackerknecht and later worked with Hugo Grau. In 1964, he became a professor at Ludwig Maximilians University, where he specialized in histology and embryology. Walter co-authored a significant work on the histology of domestic mammals published in 1967 and served in various academic roles, including Dean and Rector of the university.
